A full beginner curriculum, chapter by chapter

Chapters unlock in order. Home remembers your progress, stars, and next lesson. Guests can try the first lessons free; an optional placement quiz helps signed-in beginners skip ahead when they already know the basics.

  • Chapter 1: The board and the basics: piece moves, captures, defense, check and checkmate, draws, castling, promotion, en passant, and notation.
  • Chapter 2: First tactics: forks, pins, skewers, removing the defender, discovered attacks, mating threats, and opening traps like Scholar’s Mate.
  • Chapter 3: Building on tactics: development, double check, mating nets, pawn endgames, overloaded defenders, x-ray ideas, and creating threats.
  • Chapter 4: Strategy and planning: passed pawns, deflection and interference, weak pawns, trading when ahead, attacking the king, and endgame technique.
  • Chapters 5–6: Advanced themes and putting it together: deeper tactics, pawn play, rook endgames, calculation, and practical decision-making.

Interactive lessons that stick

Lessons are short and focused: animated board teaching, quick checks (multiple choice, board tasks, and more), then practice positions with hints and reveal-when-stuck. Earn 1–3 stars from your score and replay to improve mastery. Chapter progress tracks average mastery, not just checkmarks.

Coach Play and the chess glossary

Coach Play (Play tab) lets you play full games against an adaptive computer coach with commentary, blunder hints, takebacks, and optional clocks. Free players get a daily game allowance; Pro unlocks unlimited Coach Play and longer history.

The Search tab is a chess knowledge library: look up rules, pieces, tactics, strategy, endgames, checkmate patterns, and opening traps, then jump into related curriculum lessons with animated examples.
